I agree. We can't do optimal today, but jivera is working on librifying libarch, and that will provide better error handling. For now, either we cat the log successfully, or we die. tla 1.2.1 and later cut out scanning categories, branches and versions, unless the revision doesn't exist, but we can't be optimal.
