It has been implemented in Commit 9ad1dff71a
<https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnuastro.git/commit/?id=9ad1dff71a>. 

The new option is called '--oneelemstdout' and an example of its usage (to
directly right the value into a shell variable) is given in the book's
description of this option (also visible in the commit above).

Thanks a lot Raul for the good suggestion, this will be a very useful feature
in many scenarios ;-).
