Just found a buried pitfall:

SuSE 7.3 missed to include _weakref.so in it's Python RPM.

Thus
 import gmDispatcher.py
fails.

This can be fixed by downloading a Python 2.1 RPM from
www.python.org and copying the appropriate bits in place
(namely weakref.py* into /usr/lib/python2.1/ and _weakref.so
into /usr/lib/python2.1/lib-dynload/).

Sheesh, I nearly went freakin' mad while tracking this down.
