That's *exactly* the point of why it is a Borg descendant. It
shares state among all instances. So, any widget holding a pointer

 the_patient = gmCurrentPatient()

will always have a handle on the currently active patient
without doing anything. From there it can get at the
clinical/administrative record etc.
