Peter MacIsaac

To everyone interested in the Pharmaceutical Coding Project,

We are pleased to be able to advise you that the Department of Health and
Ageing has recently entered into a contract with EAN Australia to build and
host a central medicines repository. It is our aim that this repository
will provide a trusted and authenticated source of publicly available
medicines data to a wide range of users with the ultimate objectives of
providing:
     more accurate electronic transmission of prescription data;
     enhanced quality and efficiency of clinical decision support systems;
     better data analysis for research and health care administration; and
     greater efficiencies in the pharmaceutical product supply chain.

     The Australian Government is funding this initiative as it recognises
     that the medicines repository is an essential and fundamental piece
     of health care infrastructure.
     We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people
     that have been involved in the project to date, especially those who
     were members of the Medicines Coding Council of Australia for their
     dedication and input since November 1999.

     We have received great support from Medicines Australia, Australian
     Self-Medication Industry and the Generic Medicines Industry
     Association, to ensure that any concerns or issues raised by industry
     are identified. These organisations, along with EAN Australia and the
     Commonwealth, will be hosting a supplier forum in February/March with
     the purpose of providing suppliers with an overview of the project
     and to offer an opportunity for questions and issues to be addressed.

     The source for more detailed information relating to the project is
     the hyperlink of http://www.mediconnect.gov.au/technical/coding.htm.

     The Web site will be kept up-to-date as the project progresses. For

     and others that have had an interest in the Pharmaceutical Coding
     Project over the past four years.]

     Kind regards,
