apt can be installed on other systems; i've just succeeded on a suse system to 
try to get something installed which rpm wouldn't handle and which wouldn't 
compile. it has worked.

really i favour a debian based live-cd
but there will need to be instructions for other flavours of linux and those 
other OS's
