I tried something similar ie #patch -p1 <egenix...patch, and it said things were ok, but to no avail.

Whats the number after the p mean.

I'll read the manpage again (which I did already)

They supply a patch file.

How does one apply this?

copy the patch file into the directory where the file-to-patch resides
#patch -p0 < my-patch
where my-patch is the patch file you want to apply.

But look at the paths in the patch file first; maybe you need to go into a base directory. Alternatively you can specifiy which file to patch with what file, see "man patch"
