Pls. take a short look at
http://doc.bazaar-vcs.org/bzr.dev/en/user-guide/index.html#workflows 

where you'll see that e.g. bzr supports almost the same workflow as you
use now with CVS - centralized server where the main trunk is kept, but
with the extra possibilities for everyone to make his own branches, easy
merging etc.
