Thank you very much for replying. On the splash /login screen I get the 
following option;
Backend public GNUmed database (address@hidden)
Username any-doc
so I know I have done something stupid.
GNUmed and  PostgreSQL 8.3 were installed via apt-get. The laptop that this is 
runinng on is using the Sidux version of Debian.
I ran this script
dh-install_gnumed_server.sh
I then proceeded as per instructions on configuring the config files.
And there is nothing in
/home/gnumed/logs
and so now I am here.
