I cannot follow here. What we could do is tell gnumed to write to a special 
directory and make sure it is on the stick by say telling gnumed we are on 
windows and it should write to c:\gnumed\client\tmp or whatever the location 
for GNUmed on the stick is.

Yes but GNUmed needs to know where to look for these files.
