Getting there...

I am able to get the vm to print a test page, as well as a page from within
gedit. Lacking (in Gnome) KDE's kprinter, install the Gnome alternative gtklp
(848kB).

        sudo apt-get install gtklp

Change the two occurrences of kprinter to gtklp in

        /rc4/external-tools/ gm-print_doc (now in ~/bin)

I will try again. Should it have any relevance to GNUmed whether the CUPS
server is any of
        localhost vs /var/run/cups/cups.sock
        require encrypted connection

        (settings:)
allow / disallow (default) remote administration

IOW should all of them work, and it is merely up to the sysadmin whether they
wish the machines to share a print queue off a server and whether or not to
allow each other to kill jibs etc?

I will try again to print. If unsuccessful (prediction: I will get further, but
not to the end) I will send to the bugs list.

Administrivia below in case needed for troubleshooting

Within Ubuntu, I confirmed I could ping a networked HP Laserjet printer after
which Ubuntu's System > Administration > Printing (its "About" says
'system-config-printer 1.1.12') permitted me Server > New > Printer and input
the IP of a networked HP Laserjet (using recommended foomatic PPD).

Device URIs in the Printer configuration window > Properties now include the
working

        hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_2100_Series?ip=192.168.23.133
                of make & model
                HP LaserJet 2100 Foomatic/pxlmono (recommended)

and possibly messed up ones created by VM ware )others of which I have had to
delete)

        tpvmgp://Brother_MFC-420CN:2
                Brother MFC-420CN CUPS

        tpvmgp://Lexmark_International_Lexmark_E321:3
                Generic PostScript Printer

        tpvmgp://Penny_10.28.61.138:4
                HP LaserJet 1320 series

VM Fusion seemed able to import import the host MacBook printer setting
information. Not sure if at all related to optional VMware menu "Install VMware
Tools" or bugs therein. Printing from a Debian Lenny vm to a USB
network-connected printing seemed a bit flaky… I seemed to have to enable local
USB print sharing on the host Mac).

A Brother and Lexmark printer (both in fact USB) appear (under New printer
autodetection listings) as 'Network" … "Remote CUPS printer via DNS-SD and
drivers that took the names of other previously-created (on the Mac) HP drivers
show the same attribute under the field "Device URI" as some
