I am glad to announce that this issue has been tracked down
and fixed.
To set things straight: GNUmed would always work with PG
9.1. The one thing that did not work for a brief period was
"bootstrapping from scratch under PostgreSQL 9.1". The
reason being that PG 9.1 introduced ever tighter checks on
whether strings using escape syntax explicitely said so by a
prefix of "E".
