I've done this from gnump3d-2.98 to 3.0 by placing all my mp3s on /mnt/mp3.
I'm using Slackware Linux and mount the partition using /etc/fstab:
/dev/hde6 /mnt/mp3 ext3 defaults 1 1
I then make a symlink from my user's (huntz) home directory to my mp3s like
this:
cd /home/huntz/server
ln -s /mnt/mp3/Audio_Bible Audio_Bible
