Why not have everyone in a channel know where to send to?

Depends on where you want to scale -- sending 1000 messages to 1000
participants might not be such a great idea.  But then again, 1000 might be
the upper end for chat systems anyway, so I don't have any serious objections
to that.

Well, once again if we use the same approach as talkers (yes, I know I have to
update wikipedia on talkers) we don't even get 1000 users but only an
USER_LIMIT "per talker" (then talkers may be connected to each other), and
usually USER_LIMIT is set to 50 (although I would rather use 30).
