I am not sure if it is worth trying to always avoid depenencies, 
especially when it could simplify the code
and make life easier in other ways (XML editors etc.).

Right. And it is still possible to edit the files with text editors 
(that's how I usually edit XML files anyway ;-)

Hmm... I guess you are hinting that it is not possible to include help 
texts for fields?
As for frontend, every modern system should have an xml editor ?
