well, I notice that gentoo now configures windowmaker without libungif explicitely. Among windowmaker and gnustep I am more concerned in gnustep :) After all, windowmaker is just there to handle the dock, the window ordering and non-gnustep applications :)

WIth the GNUstep ebuilds in Gentoo, giflib should be being used for
 >=gnustep-back-0.9.5.  WindowMaker may need >=windowmaker-0.92.0-r1
... I'm still working on that one -- been busy lately. ;-)

A quick note also is that it is "giflib" and "libungif.

Yes, but the "giflib" package installs "libgif.so".

ANother thing that I wondered is that it gets linked into every application. Thus if I recompile gnustep-core without gif support, Terminal.app or GWorkspace.app won't start up since they don't find libungif anymore.. I hoped this could be insulated into the gui/backend only!

Hrm...I see this too, and that does seem wrong. Does anyone else out
there experience this on Linux-based systems? Or is this a GNUstep on
Gentoo thing? Let me know, before I go trying to fix something that
isn't really broken ...
