Sorry, I forgot to mention that this happens when I click on any
mailbox file, like Inbox, that does contain mails. Clicking on an
empty mailbox file, like Drafts, the Message window opens up fine.

Following Ludovic's advice, I reinstalled GNUstep, Pantomime and
GNUMail -- to no avail.
