2) LaternaMagica can't display images (only in fullscreen mode)
What version of gnustep and LaternaMagica are you running?I just tried against core from SVN trunk and CVS head of LM and all valid images display perfectly both in in-window as in full-screen mode.
Are you sure your system is coherent? Try rebuilding core after removing the old version and afterwards rebuilding your apps too.
