Descriptor sources can be monitored, but they're not monitored by the
runloop itself, although API users don't need to know. See
CFFileDescriptor and CFSocket, which can both serve as a runloop source
for descriptors.

Of course, extensions can be added, but at least for me the foremost
priority is achieving OS X compatibility.
