It's the (ancient) gcc 4.2.1 that comes with OpenBSD system. I guess if I'd just
try a newer gcc from ports tree, the problem would disappear.

I can build gnustep + GAP with gcc 4.2.1 without problems on FreeBSD.
But of course, it could be a specific Alpha bug.
