Yes.  I have an 18x but not tried it yet.

I did the same for years at my office.  The Garmin18 works fine when
roof mounted.  Not so good on the side of my house.  So it was easier to
buy a SiRFIII then to get the Garmin18 on my house roof.

Yup.  I would guess 10x to 20x better from my recent experience.
