I wonder if it's necessary for the various pieces to all have
pre-privdrop and post-privdrop parts, and to run all the pre- parts, and
then synchronize on a mutex/condvar/etc. and then drop, and then do the
post- parts.

I think esr is right that changing uid or giving up caps is a process
thing, not a thread thing.
