It doesn't seem very likely that the II versus III difference could matter.
But I've got a BR-355 here, which is SiRF-III; I'll run the same test.

Well, that's interesting. The hunt loop is stock at 4800. Who knew
that could happen? The BR-355 shows as as a PL2303 just like the 303,
so it probably isn't the bridge chip.
Weird. I'll investigate.
