err, what now ?  no they don't.  it's an oddity to be discouraged.

that said, the tarballs look like they do the sane thing -- they don't fetch 
but instead use a local cached copy.  for the git tree, i tend to give a bit 
of leeway to devs to keep things sane when it comes to maintenance, so i don't 
see a problem keeping the code in there.
