It always seems to hang when switching from SiRF binary to NMEA.

I haven't found a simple reproducible test pattern.  On the other hand, 
typing "n/RETURN" a few times always seems to kill it.  Sometimes it takes 
more than a few.

In case it matters, mine says:
Firmware version:
FGSD4e_4.0.4-P1_RPATCH.07-GS008-F-GPS-4R-1201128 01/12/2012 012

Mine always runs at 4800.  I've seen it get confused when switching to/from 
9600.  I'll collect a few (fuzzy) details if you want another rat hole to 
investigate.

I have old log files if that will help.
They seem to contain a lot of raw binary stuff.
