If you want to debug, it's best to just "git clone" and use the tip of
master.

Part of the issue is that OS X has been a moving target, changing
headers and compilers.  Now it's clang only.

It would be helpful if someone could make sure master is ok (build and
test) with clang on various platforms.    Generally clang has been fine,
but it's less forgiving of buggy code.  More likely, the buggy code that
causes trouble with gcc has been debugged out, leaving ok code and bugs
that don't trip with gcc.
