You don't actually need that much space. If it's off by many seconds, you
don't care about the nanoseconds.
If 12 spaces (sign, digit, decimal point, 9 digits) is good enough for the
normal cases, I'd be happy with that width in the nasty case. Just drop as
many low digits as it takes to make it fit.
