It would also be helpful if:

  there were a stronger norm of "one semantic change, one git commit",
  although this is mostly ok

  commit messages were far better (this is not mostly ok).   commit
  messages should describe and summarize the change, then give rationale
  if not obviously and finally include comments about test status
