OSX update:
I removed the osx-pl2303 driver. It is no longer really open source
(sourceforge doesn't have code, and there's a link to pay for a
download). There's a fork on github, but it's not super maintained
either.
I installed the official prolific driver.
The GR601-W now works just fine, including restarting gpsd after it's
installed.
A ublox AEK-4H (antaris4 development kit) also works fine. (This seems
to use a different USB/serial kind of chip.)
So:
the 'upstream bugs' should be narrowed to the osx-pl2303 driver, and
it should be recommended against.
the "OSX unsupported" notion should be backed out, as that was mostly
based on the osx-pl2303 problems.
