Weird, all that one does is prefix logs from serial.c with "SER:".
If changing static strings is a problem that could be a wild pointer?

Not failing for me either. I just tried on 64-bit amd64/gentoo and
32bit arm7/Gentoo.
Are you seeing an error like this:
"SER: error setting port attributes: %s\n"
Otherwise that change should have no effect.
