Once again, we'll have to agree to disagree on that.

From my rececnt work in SConstruct I believe, unproven, that scons can
deal just fine with making tar balls on all supported OS.  It is the
gpsd SConstruct that is broken. gpsd does it by hand instead of using
the scons built-ins.  There is now a documented workaround. So not a
current issue.

Yeah, it is just all the other stuff that is broken with autotools.

Yup.  gps, and many other packages gave up on autotools a long time ago.

For good reasons.

A lot of the gpsd scons bugs are our own fault.  But, maybe something like
meson would be better.  Topic for another day.
