In pkgsrc, we have netcat, gnetcat, and openbsd-netcat.
netcat is at 1.10 and I think matches what you have.
gnetcat amy be old or different; I don't know about it.
openbsd-netcat has a lot more options including socks5 support, useful
for using as a proxy for ssh to connect to an onion ssh server.
I have no idea if openbsd-netcat is packaged for gentoo, but if so that
would likely work.
I have the impression some systems have picked up some or all of the
openbsd additions
