Ok, this is the simple workaround I've been using, which will hold me
until you get to the "right" solution...

        $(GROFF) -P-Ixxx.1 -P-o0 -P-i100 -t -man -Thtml xxx.1 \
                | sed 's#</table>#&<br>#' > xxx.1.html
