The mess around variable `device' and other global variables is deeper
than it seemed at first sight.  This can be fixed by strictly 
separating the formatting process from the postprocessing, e.g. by
defining a new class, e.g. `PostProcess'.

But this is a lot of work (though straight-forward).  I postpone this
after the release of groff 1.18 in order to get done some more pressing
work.
