[Groff] sqtroff / groff diffs - escape sequences

The following is legal in sqtroff 

\h[-\\n[tmarg]u]\v[-\\n[vadj]]\D[b \\n[width]u -\\n[height]u]

but in groff (called mid way through a macro) produces 
<standard input>:11: warning: numeric expression expected (got `]')

Any pointers would be appreciated
