This reminds me of question I've had lingering in the back of my mind for some time now. Once upon a time, I tried to convert a dvi file generated with devdvi to PDF by either using dvips->PDF creation program (either GhostScript 7.0x's ps2pdf, Jaws PDF Creator 2.1) or directly with dvipdfm using the BlueSky Type 1 fonts and in each case, the output was botched badly. All text appeared as if the char boxes had no height, the size of a flea. The problem did not appear if I used dvips defaults, using PK bitmaps.
