I'm getting something similar on a solaris machine.
Two things are happening here:
* sed doesn't understand " \+" (neither " +"; it doesn't
understand + at all). Use " *" (two spaces!).
* groff is calling geqn, gpic, gtbl, gtroff, ..., thus
referring to the installed previous version, instead of
the newly built eqn, pic, tbl, troff, ...
To resolve this, explicitly set
GROFF_COMMAND_PREFIX='' export GROFF_COMMAND_PREFIX
