No. It gives you the control and typesetting power that you don't have in
ms. If you wanted even more control, you would use MOM and/or roll your own
macros. Or perhaps you'd be more comfortable using a high-level typesetting
language such as ConTeXt? If you want real typographical control, you have
to be willing to pay the price of inserting formatting codes and sometimes
programming your own macros, and that is *not* a "waste of typographer's
time".
