[Groff] Integral sign \(is in devdvi

Why is it that the integral sign comes out as some hacked-looking
glyph in devdvi?  If I type

\(is

I get something which is really of no use for mathematical typesetting.
I can get the proper, Computer Modern integral only by first putting

.char \(is \f[EX]\N'90'

But in the font-file EX of devdvi, character 90 *already* has the names
'is' and 'integral'.  I cannot find anything in dvi.tmac which redefines
these groff names to some combination of \D escapes - which is what the
default glyph looks like.  What's going on here?
