BTW, this is a simplification. A word actually can contain other
letters, splitting the original string into smaller substrings
because the hyphenation codes of those letters are zero. For example,
the string `patter!ns' is still hyphenated as `pat-ter!ns' because
there is a pattern which covers `patter'.
I've now added the following at the end of the hcode description:
Without those assignments, groff treats German words like
`Kindergärten' (the plural form of `kindergarten') as two substrings
`kinderg' and `rten' because the hyphenation code of the
address@hidden is zero by default. There is a German hyphenation
pattern which covers `kinder', so groff finds the hyphenation
`kin-der'. The other two hyphenation points (`kin-der-gär-ten') are
missed.
