I was going to suggest simply Unicode HYPHEN-MINUS; I know you don't
like it typographically, but HYPHEN has a bad habit of being unavailable
in console fonts (and even a few common X fonts).

However, I've just read your mail saying that distributions should
instead change this to be in sync with the console fonts they expect to
be available, which is fair enough. When I saw you talking about
tty.tmac, I assumed that there was a way to make groff output different
mappings depending on whether it's been told that it's outputting to a
terminal or not. In retrospect, my thought processes didn't make a whole
lot of sense ...
