Hi,

here is a set of instructions for adding a chess font to groff and a
macro set (which solves the problem in a less sophisticated way to
that as the one posted by Tadziu Hoffmann) - but as it was written
from scratch and so it can be added to GNU Groff if others want..

the macro set does contain (at least one known bug) namely that the
bottom labelled x-axis is not always located at the correct y position
(depending upon the choice of font size).  However in the words of one
of our fellow subscribers "release often and release early"
