I did try GROFF_TMPDIR by putting
export GROFF_TMPDIR="C:/Users/jws/AppData/Local/Temp"
in my environment definitions. Checked it with echo $GROFF_TMPDIR, but no
help.
Setting up a whole new shell environment, like Cygwin, sounds more ambitious
than I want to branch to
now. i have to get over this and get to designing spacecraft. Thanks

This has been discussed recently on the list. Please look it up.
Since groff creates temporary files it is important to set the proper
environment variables so that they point to user-writable directories.
That's the same person who brought it up originally, Werner. He's
still trying to work through the problem. He tried setting the temp
file environment variables and it didn't help. (Although he didn't
mention trying GROFF_TMPDIR)
however I believe a "bug" in the Vista compatibility of these
programs. [...]
I don't think so, but since I'm not a Windows user, I can't verify
it. In case you can satisfactorily solve this issue I would be glad
if you could contribute a note to the file README.MinGW (or whatever
you consider appropriate).
He's running groff under MKS. Hmmm, now that I think about it…

John, would you be able to try Cygwin? It also provides shell
services for MS operating systems, but it's free at cygwin.org. I've
dinked around with it on W2K and XP (they don't do Vista at work, and
I don't run that stuff at home :-).
There's a 1.19.2 version of Groff for W32 at http://
gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/groff.htm -- that might also be of
use.
