Much thanks to both of you. I've got Werner's solution mostly
working in my situation, but I'm still testing. For some reason,
different amounts of text in the footnote seem to trigger
different reactions in the formatting. I'll report back as soon
as I have something more scientifically established. (As well, I
have comments about all the comments.)
