You should find changing the 10i in the pipeline you've quoted above to
4i has an effect; and that's using -Tutf8. Here's another example,
setting LL on the command line instead of groff's input.
for f in 3 4 5 6 7 8; do
yes $f | sed 50q | groff -Tutf8 -rLL=${f}i -ms | grep .
done
Again, this is using utf8. If you can't re-produce these then we need
more detail, e.g. the command and its input, reduced to a simple case.
