For me, a big difference between the two is that groff is a
filter and tex is not. In other words, if you want to convert
your input from some customized markup to groff input, you can
put groff in the middle of a pipeline and get extremely fast
results. With tex and latex you need to use intermediary files.
Also, I've always had to run latex twice in order to get cross
references to update; no different than groff.

This is a great signature line, which I haven't seen before. Does
it have an open-source licence so that I can use it too?
