It's not entirely clear what the problem exactly is, but I suspect
that you are asking how to change the indent without breaking the
line. For example, if you use
.in +0.5i
to increase the indent by 0.5 inch, you will cause a break at the
point where ".in" is encountered.

However, if you use
'in +0.5i
instead (replace the . by ') then there will be no line-break at
that point. You should place this anywhere within the input text
which will appear in the output line preceding the new indentation.

Then, when you want to cancel the new indentation and revert to the
old one, simply place
'in
anywhere within the input text which will appear in the output line
preceding the change of indentation.
