I  don't have time now to look why this happens, but
Werner's method works with .AS as well:

    .ds eq $a sup b$
    .AS
    \\*[eq] is a formula in the abstract!
    ...

just make sure to use \\ instead of \ to  delay  the
expansion  of  the string to the moment the abstract
is actually printed.
