groff's default output is PostScript.

    $ groff <<<hello | grep hello
    /F0 10/address@hidden SF(hello)72 12 Q 0 Cg EP
    $

So you don't need to use DVI as an intermediate format.  Or perhaps
you're trying to do something more complex that requires it?
