I came from TeX, and luckily groff then had strings with arguments
already!

  .STRING I \\,\\fI\\$*\\fP\\/

is \*[I almost] as easy (especially with US keyboard) as

  address@hidden@address@hidden@setFont{it}}%
  \def\tit#1{{\it#1\/}}

the \tit{version} of \TeX.  Almost as clean.
